New Orleans Poster Printing - Getting your artwork to print the way you like it

Gloss coated paper works perfectly for art posters. The colors look brighter and the coating gives the poster a nice shine. Coincidentally, UV coatings help protects artwork from moisture and adds durability to the paper, providing an extra layer of protection and adding to its longevity.
The biggest decision to make about your poster is which weight to use. You will also need to consider where your poster will be hanged. if you hang it outdoors, you will need a heavier stock and a UV coating to prevent fading. Heavier weights will last much longer in the outside elements and stay around longer. Usually, it is good to use 24# or 28# paper for posters. The larger the print, the heavier the paper should be so that it will be durable enough.

New Orleans print shop- Paper weight 101

Paper Weight

Paper weight can be measured by the weight of a 500-sheet ream of 17" x 22" bond paper. The size of the basis ream, for each type of paper, is different, which results in majorly different weights. For example, a ream of 20#, 8.5 × 11 bond paper weighs 5 lbs. because it has been cut from a larger sheet into four portions. And just so you know, 80# means 80 lbs. per basis ream of 500 sheets.
Here are some common standards:
20-24# - Standard weight paper
24-28# - For posters
80-100# - Satndard business cards

Post card printing- Direct mail is like investing in loyalty

Post card marketing is more explicit than the direct mail marketing. Some practitioners like that postcards are more effective than the traditional, stuffed-envelope sort of direct marketing because, it is more cost-effective, discarding the use of an envelope. It is also appreciated for the fact that the message does not need to be opened, thus the recipient sees it instantly, every time.

Apart from just post cards, greeting cards, such as birthday cards and holiday greetings are also a good thing to send to your clients. Using personalization techniques such as, variable data printing will surely make them feel that you remember them on special occasions. If you take the time to include a money-saving coupon or a gift certificate, they will remember you when they need your line of business again.

How to print your brochure, magazine or posters with coated paper

When to choose coatings
Adding a coating makes a really big impact on the look and feel of your print product, so watch closely. Coated papers have china clay or other synthetic coating applied onto them. It comes in a variety of techtures, like matte, semi-matte or silk, and gloss. MPress has a unique matte coating with a soft, velvety feel to it, called Soft Touch.
Matte finishes, including Soft Touch coating, are not really meant for photograph heavy layout or robust text. However, glossy, silk and semi-matte are great for it. Due to the paper quality, much of the ink doesn't get absorbed by the paper fibers and ends up staying on the surface. This makes the colors pop and the paper shine.
If you have a lot of type to print, choose a natural, matte paper. Uncoated papers allow for better, deeper ink absorption. You will not end up with so much shine and reflection of overhead light, that the type becomes difficult to read.

Coated papers are best for:
  1. Photographic images
  2. Illustrative design
  3. Colors that should pop

Uncoated papers are best for:
  1. Booklets
  2. Magazines
  3. Catalogs & Guides

You've probably already noticed that there are many work arounds for any issue arising from the use of coated or uncoated paper. One example is that you may use a gloss coated paper to print on and then give a matte UV coating, so that the graphics and colors do not become too blurry or muted by the matte finish.

Post processing methods can put you over budget, even on small jobs. You need to be clever in your choices to get your vision to manifest. Here are some issues to consider when devising your plans:
  1. What is your final product? Look-book, tri-fold brochure, post card,     menu…

  3. Is there a stylized quality that is a must-have for your design? High-end? Inexpensive? Matte coating? Embossed?
  4. What kind of graphics will be on the finished product? Many high resolution photographic images? Or a tons of light weight text?

Getting Started With New Print Media

Once you’ve settled on dimensions, when developing new print media, the first question should be about the purpose of the piece. If you plan to use the printed items for brochure (within a envelope) for a direct marketing program, for example, you can achieve a nice look, at an affordable price by using glossy, light, text weight paper. However, if you are doing something special, you have a variety of clever options to select from. Perhaps your design would look better with a tactile, 68# text embossed wood grain paper. Maybe you’ve created something that needs to last a while and you want go with a premium, heavy card stock. The next option you may like to consider is which sorts of coating options works best. You may also decide to add dull coating, UV coating, die cutting, folding & scoring, embossing and a plethora of other design embellishments— all depending on what the purpose of the print media may be.

Coatings

A press coating is a covering that is applied to the surface of the paper. The purpose of applying the coating is to create visual effects and to seal inks and prevent rub-off. The coating itself may be an all-over coating, completely covering the substrate, or it may only cover parts of the printed piece. An example of a press coating is a UV coating product called Soft Touch, which helps protect the printed piece while adding a tactile dimension. The results are even better than more expensive ‘fiber’ paper stocks.

Choosing your paper stock is pretty straight forward, but don't let yourself get confused: Even when your heart desires an ultra matte effect, gloss coated stock is the way to go because, gloss finish on the paper provides the best printability. There just isn't any benefit to using uncoated paper with coatings & varnishes. If you pick an uncoated stock, go with matte or satin varnishes or coatings because, coated papers are absorbent, so coatings perform differently than on coated papers.

Three different press coatings are used in commercial sheetfed printing: varnish, aqueous coating, and ultra-violet coating (UV). All three are available in matte, dull or satin, and gloss formulations.

For more information and to see samples please call MPress: (504) 524-8248

VARNISH
Varnish is a petroleum-based sealant applied by a standard inking unit in the press. It is the most economical coating. Varnish is available in matte, dull or gloss and can be applied on the entire press sheet or in selected areas. Varnish is applied on the last unit (inline), or as a second pass (drytrap), to seal the offset inks and provide rub protection.
On coated papers, varnish provides a difference of sheen where it is applied. For instance, a gloss varnish on a dull coated stock will make the paper look glossy. In this case, varnishes are often specified only on the printed image, called a spot varnish, so that photographs look very glossy on the matte surface. On uncoated papers, varnishes are widely used for rub protection. They will notprovide a visual effect, no matter what kind or how many layers of varnish are applied. However varnishes will darken ink colors—making solid blacks even blacker. Always use a matte or dull varnish on uncoated papers. A gloss varnish has a greater likelihood of appearing uneven, or mottled, accentuating the natural highs and lows of the paper.
Varnishes can yellow paper over time. Varnishes can also be tinted with pigments to provide very light and transparent colors for text and graphics. Varnishes are the most flexible coating. They may be used on any weight stock and be applied over ink without fear of bleeding. For projects that require gluing (envelopes, pocket folders, book covers), please check with the bindery whether it is necessary to knockout (not use) the varnish where the glue is going to be applied.

AQUEOUS COATING
Aqueous coating is a water-based sealant applied by an inking unit of the press or a special coater tower. Aqueous coating is available in matte, dull, satin, and gloss and provides better rub protection than varnish. Printers prefer using aqueous coating which dries immediately allowing for quicker back-ups. The visual effect of aqueous coating will be the same as varnish on both coated and uncoated papers. Again, only specify matte or dull aqueous on uncoated papers, as gloss may mottle. Aqueous coatings are typically used to cover the entire press sheet. Spot aqueous coating is available although it requires expensive blankets. However, aqueous coating is clear and should not yellow the paper so specifying a spot aqueous may not be necessary.

ULTRA-VIOLET COATING
Ultra-violet coating is a highly reactive, cross-linking system in which the vehicle is dried by exposure to UV radiation. UV varnish is applied inline on a UV press; UV coating is applied by silkscreen, offline. It provides the best rub protection but also is the most expensive of all the coatings. UV is available in matte, dull, satin and gloss, although gloss is usually all that is specified. UV coating/varnish is glossier than all of the other coatings—UV applied by silkscreen provides the ultimate gloss. UV is used on a full range of coated papers. 80 text and heavier weights of paper can be UV coated, however, cover weights are preferred. UV can be used on smooth, uncoated papers. Pre-testing is highly recommended as the paper will need to be sealed before the UV is applied—which can be cost prohibitive.  UV can be easily specified as spot or overall coverage. This coating application can deepen the color of the printed area. Drying is virtually instantaneous when exposed to the correct level of UV light so projects can move quickly into the bindery. Like the other coatings, consult the bindery for projects requiring gluing.
